From 30 November – 12 December 2023, the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), the global decision-making body of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. COP28 marked the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake (GST), the main mechanism for assessing progress under the Paris Agreement. The first GST aimed to help align efforts on climate action, including measures that need to be put in place to bridge the gaps in progress.
UNEP’s engagement at COP28 focused on the following areas:
- Climate finance
- Climate adaptation
- Loss and damage
- Climate technology
- A just and equitable transition that prioritizes the rights and needs of communities and groups most affected by the climate crisis
- Supported the COP28 UAE Presidency on a range of activities and topics including cooling, methane, food system, nature and land use.
