UNEP at the climate COP28

'In 2023, climate change yet again became more disruptive and deadly....These intensifying impacts tell us that the world must urgently cut greenhouse gas emissions and increase adaptation efforts to protect vulnerable populations'.

From 30 November – 12 December 2023, the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), the global decision-making body of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. COP28 marked the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake (GST), the main mechanism for assessing progress under the Paris Agreement. The first GST aimed to help align efforts on climate action, including measures that need to be put in place to bridge the gaps in progress.

UNEP's climate action portfolio

UNEP takes a five-pronged approach to countering the climate crisis and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement:

  1. Compiles research to support science-based decision-making on climate change.
  2. Works across sectors to support the transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
  3. Ensures a just transition to a carbon-neutral world by empowering communities.
  4. Develops sustainable mechanisms to unlock financing for climate-related initiatives, helping countries both mitigate and adapt to climate change.
  5. Supports on-the-ground projects to help communities build their resilience to climate change.
