Программа ООН по окружающей среде
Since its creation in 1972, UNEP has monitored the state of the environment, informed policymaking with science and coordinated global responses to environmental challenges. Its work has been made possible by the dedication and commitment of its staff, combined with strong leadership vision and member state support. UNEP is headed by an Executive-Director at the Under-Secretary-General level. Thus far, eight leaders have held the role from a variety of backgrounds, including public service, private sector, nongovernmental, science and policymaker backgrounds. Executive-Directors are appointed by and report to the United Nations Secretary-General.
UNEP@50: A time to reflect on the past and envision the future
The 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, was the first-ever UN conference with the word “environment” in its title. The creation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) was one of the most visible outcomes of this conference of many firsts. UNEP was created quite simply to be the environmental conscience of the UN and the world. Activities taking place through 2022 will look at significant progress made as well as what’s ahead in decades to come.
